In addition to running my day school, The Transition Academy, during the day, I teach literature at night for kids that did not pass the first time and need to get their credit back to graduate.
For the last 10 years or so, I've been having them read Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game." It is loved unanimouslyby every student that's read it, female or male!
If you've never read the book, it's the story of a group of genius children being trained to become the space commanders that Earth will need to stave off an upcoming invasion. It won every award that is possible in sci-fi, including the Hugo and the Nebula and is really just an amazing, page-turning read.
For many, many years, Hollywood wanted to make this movie but the Author, Orson Scot Card, refused to relenquish creative control. They wanted to replace the 6 and ten year olds in the book with teens, put in a love interest and a host of other things that would have warped (and ruined!) the original story.
Finally the public demand was such that the studio agreed to let orson control the script.
To me, that is the single most important ingredient in a good movie...a good story written by a good writer.
Here's a link to the site that carries the news of the upcoming film:

It's going to be directed by Wolfgang Peterson whi is just coming off the excellent "Poseidon" and is the director of the equally stellar "Das Boot."
I can't WAIT!!!!!!
