A small group of US troups and an Egyptologist use an ancient device found in 1920s Egypt to transport themselves to a distant planet.

I LOVED this movie!  And of course, I love Stargate SG-1.

Not only did I love this movie, but so did my mother.  I have a background in cultural anthropology, so I really liked how the writers of the film incorporated Egyptian culture and mythology into the alien race that pretended to be gods in order to control and dominate the more primitive natives of the planet.  I'm a fan of James Spader, and his portayal of the nerdish Egyptologist is very believable, plus his character's interaction with the native people at times adds a bit of comic relief to the movie.  Perhaps what truly makes this film stand out, however, is its special effects.  "Neat" is the best word I can think of to describe the hi-tech disguises which the aliens wore to make themselves look like Egyptian gods.  It was amazing how the "helmets" they wore that resembled the heads of different gods would "collapse" at the touch of a button, revealing the head of the humanoid aliens beneathe them.
