Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY, on January 16, 1979 to Michael and Diane Haughton, but was raised in Detroit, Michigan. Her name means "Highest, Most Exalted, The Best" in Arabic.
Sadly, on August 25, 2001, she, the pilot, and all 7 other passengers died in a plane crash while flying from the Bahamas to an airport near Miami, FL.

| Such a loss it was when she died while in the middle of filming Queen of the damned, after her phenomenal performance in Romeo must Die her career in the movie world would have really taken off.
