Although the movies were excellent, the books win hands down, no question about it.  Tolkien had a richness in his writing, and a tremendous amount of detail that was in the books, that was just impossible to put into film.  Remember, the movies were made because the books were so phenominal in the first place.  The Lord Of the Rings books sold more copies than any other non-religious book in the 20th century.  Its definitely the books.

I like the novel better, of course the book missed on certain parts where the novel doesn't really miss. The only upside of the novel is that it is already presented graphically!

If it's for entertainment then i'll go for the movie and the books for the content.
