I wasn't sure why this movie won an award for Halle unless it was because she was willling to play such a debased person. This movie showed how the lives of the poor are completely controlled by circumstance to their complete and utter detriment.
*spoiler alert*
Halle Berry is a poor working woman, her husband is in prison, (P. Diddy) her morbidly obese son is hit by a car (hit and run) and dies and the one person she can count on is the white man who is a prison guard (Billy Bob Thornton) of her executed husband. This man had a son (Heath Ledger) who was also a guard at the prison and committed suicide in part because of the difficulties in their relationship.
Both of them were sad, lonely people who had only each other to reach out and hold onto. This entire movie was very affecting, and very sad. It was unclear to me that there was any hope in it, but maybe it was left open to interpretation.Last edited on Sun Feb 18th, 2007 03:35 am by glennie58
